Mini-Stroke (TIA)A transient ischemic attack (TIA), or mini-stroke, occurs when oxygen is cut off to an area of the brain. Unlike a stroke, which is permanent, a TIA can last from a few moments to a full day. If you have experienced a TIA, you have a greater risk of developing a stroke in the future. TIAs are very serious and you should seek medical help right away. The risk factors for a TIA, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, obesity and family history, are similar to those for heart disease. In addition, men are at 3 times greater risk of having a TIA than females.
