Dermatitis stasis of the leg A venous skin ulcer is a shallow wound on the lower third of the leg that develops when the leg veins have problems moving blood back toward the heart. The surrounding skin is often discolored. The lower leg tends to swell as the day progresses, but the swelling goes down in bed overnight. The wound may be slow to heal without the use of compression bandages or support stockings.
